How to Fix Error 651 in Windows 8

Error 651 is a common problem noticed by Windows users. If you are using Windows 8 and come across this problem, then we have some solutions that will help you fix the error. The error usually occurs when you are trying to connect to the internet. Quite a few of our readers reported the problem and they needed a solution for this error. The problem may have occurred because of an IP address conflict or errors in the registry files.

Solutions to fix error 651 in Windows 8

Solution 1:

Boot your computer in Safe Mode with Networking. Press Windows + R keys then the Run window appears > type MSCONFIG > click Ok >click Boot tab > under Boot Options, choose Safe Boot > check Network checkbox under options and click OK. Restart your computer.

Solution 2:

Clean booting may also help you fix error 651 in Windows 8.In doing this, follow the steps below:

  • Press Windows + R keys.
  • Type MSCONFIG on the run window and select OK.
  • Click Boot tab > uncheck Safe Boot.
  • Go back to General tab >from the options, select Selective Startup and uncheck options to clear selections.
  • Go to Services > click Disable all button.
  • Go to Startup tab >disable each item
  • Restart your computer.
  • When your computer restarts on a clean boot, press Windows + R keys and type MSCONFIG and click OK.
  • Got to Services tab > click on Hide all Microsoft Services > click OK then restart your computer.

If the problem still exists, enable half of the Startup items. Press Windows + R keys. Type MSCONFIG and click OK. Go to Startup tab >do not click Hide all, select half of the startup items manually. Click OK and restart your computer. After you are done troubleshooting, set your computer to its normal startup. Press Windows + R keys > type MSCONFIG > go to General tab >select Normal Startup and click Restart as it pops.

Solution 3

Sometimes, file regsvr32 rasppoe.sys is the main cause of error 651 in Windows 8. Check if regsvr32 rasppoe.sys is not having a problem. Go to start > type cmd in the Search field and press Enter >when the Command window opens, type regsvr32 rasppoe.sys and click OK. If regsvr32 rasppoe.sys failed to load, there must be a problem on it. Download a new copy of regsvr32 rasppoe.sys online. NOTE: Unzip the downloaded file first before replacing the old file. Follow the steps below:

  • Go to My Computer > on the Windows explorer, locate your Drive C.
  • Open on the Windows folder > double click System 32 Folder.
  • Open Drivers folder > find rasppoe.sys file and rename it so that you don’t have to delete it. Perhaps, you may rename it as old-rasppoe.sys > copy and paste the new rasppoe.sys file in the folder.
  • Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Solution 4

A very basic resolution for this error is to simply switch off the router and if you are using a LAN connection, then unplug the LAN wire from your computer. Now wait for 5 minutes and plug it back. Switch on the router and try to establish the connection once again. By simply reconnecting the router, a lot of our readers have been able to solve the problem.

Solution 5

Resetting the TCP/IP settings is another way in which you can solve this error. You simply need to use a command on your Windows 8 computer to reset the networking stack on your computer. Follow these steps:

  • Take your mouse pointer to the top right corner of your screen to bring the Charms bar.
  • Click on Search
  • In the search bar that comes up, type cmd and then tap enter on your keyboard
  • You will notice the Search results for the programs. Right click on cmd and click on Run as administrator
  • If you are asked for a password, then enter the administrator password to proceed
  • You will see the black Command Prompt on your screen
  • Type “netsh int ip reset” and hit enter

Your computer will let you now that the TCP/IP settings have been reset. You must reboot your computer for the changes to take effect. Once your computer restarts, check if the problem has been resolved.

Solution 6

Anyone who uses a router should try to disable the auto-tuning feature to resolve the problem.

  • Launch the Command Prompt with administrative rights as mentioned in the steps before.
  • You can either type the below command as is, or copy and paste this in the command prompt: Netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled
  • Once you type this command, hit enter

Try to connect to the internet once again and check if the error has been fixed.

Solution 7

Another way to solve the problem is by reinstalling the network adapter. All you need to do is uninstall the adapter and the computer will automatically reinstall it when your computer is restarted.

  • Tap the two buttons – Windows key and R key – together.
  • In the box that comes up, type devmgmt.msc and hit enter
  • The device manager will open in a new window on your computer screen
  • Look for the category – Network Adapters
  • Now click on the + icon next to it
  • This will show the adapters that are installed on your computer
  • Right click on the first adapter and click on uninstall

Once the adapter is uninstalled, you must restart your computer so that it can reinstall the same adapter once again. Try to connect to the internet and check if the problem has been fixed.
